clarifying when Feast of the Annunciation as a Holy Day of Obligation is abrogated
(Pls. see sentences in bold at bottom of page)
Reinstatement of Holy Days of Obligation
to include two additional Holy Days
In the Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission (ALC) meeting of September 21, 2022, the Commission Members voted to proceed with the reinstatement of the following Holy Days of Obligation. The Commission voted to have them implemented with the New Liturgical Year beginning with the First Sunday of Advent – November 27, 2022.
A letter was sent by the Liturgical Commission to Archbishop Michael J. Byrnes on June 24, 2020, requesting the reinstatement of Holy Days and adding two additional days: the Feast of the Annunciation, March 25 and Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, January 1. Approval was given.
The Holy Days are:
- January 01 – Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God
- March 25 – Feast of the Annunciation (“to reaffirm respect for life from the moment of conception.”)
- Thursday of the Sixth Week of Easter – Solemnity of the Ascension of the Lord
- · August 15 – Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary
- November 01 – Feast of All Saints
- December 08 – Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
- December 25 – Solemnity of the Nativity of Our Lord Jesus Christ
NOTE: Whenever January 1, the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God; or August 15, the Solemnity of the Assumption; or November 1, the Solemnity of All Saints; or March 25, the Feast of the Annunciation falls on a Saturday or on a Monday, the precept of the Holy Day of Obligation is abrogated. However, the proper of the Solemnity/Feast is still celebrated. In this context, “abrogated” means, removed.
By Order of His Excellency Michael J. Byrnes, S.T.D., Metropolitan Archbishop of Agaña.
Yours faithfully in Christ,
/s/Rev. Fr. Romeo D. Convocar
